Postpartum Depression

Falling into the abyss of depression, when an infant is completely dependent on her, and as much as she wants to love it, she feels nothingness and emptiness, is the complete opposite of the fantasy a woman has while pregnant.
During the many years of working with births, mothers and infants, I also came very close to the emotional effect of postpartum depression. As I became an analyst I felt drawn to inquire deeper into this abyss, as it was clear, no woman chooses it, rather she is thrown into it and suffers the guilt. Surely the subject had been researched from varies angles and perspectives, however, less so from the Jungian lenses. As a Jungian psychologist and analyst, I felt the angle I can add may be valuable, and I began my inquiry. Soon, the inquiry, became a deeper research into the possible origins and possible healing through analysis, and found its way into my dissertation as an aspect of the primal relationship. Ever since then, more women suffering postpartum depression reached out to me, and my experience and understanding grew bigger.
In working with a woman in the abyss of depression, when her baby is craving her closeness, and she is thrown away filled with guilt, shame, and self hatred, I imagine my-self to be holding "Ariadne's thread", walking into this labyrinth to find her, and then carefully walking out with her.
